The wife & the two teenaged sons of Taj Hotel’s General Manager Karambir Kang were killed in the terrorist attack in the hotel A relative of the Kangs family, which hails from Mohali, said while Karambir Kang was not in the hotel last night, his wife Neeti & sons Uday 14 years old & Samar 5 years old killed in the terrorist strike.

The three deceased were residing in the accommodation provided to them at the hotel & became targets of the terrorist bullets, a releative of the Kangs family said

• A senior leader of the Taliban in Pakistan today claimed responsibility for the bomb attack in Lahore that killed at least 24 people and wounded hundreds more, saying it was revenge for the army offensive against militants in Swat valley.
• Hakimullah Mehsud, a deputy to the Pakistani Taliban chief, Baitullah Mehsud, told the Associated Press that the attack on the offices of the police chief and Pakistan's main spy agency, the ISI, was connected to the military operation.
• "It was in response to the Swat operation where innocent people have been killed," Mehsud said. The little-known group Taliban Movement in Punjab has also claimed responsibility for the attack

WASHINGTON: As Afghan president Hamid Karzai and Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari meet with President Barack Obama on quelling the threat from the Taliban and Al Qaeda, a sword of Damocles hangs over their summit: the danger that the Islamic extremist groups may gain control of some or all of Pakistan’s nuclear assets. The success or failure of the anti-Taliban operation currently underway in Pakistan could be the first indicator of the seriousness of the danger ahead.

Securing these assets is not simply a matter of locking away Pakistan’s 80 or so nuclear weapons; a much wider array of nuclear resources are potentially at risk. Moreover, extremists have multiple means for causing mayhem with these assets and can exploit multiple avenues to try to gain access to them.

• Barack Obama gave the go-ahead for his first military action yesterday, missile strikes against suspected militants in Pakistan which killed at least 18 people.
• Four days after assuming the presidency, he was consulted by US commanders before they launched the two attacks. Although Obama has abandoned many of the "war on terror" policies of George Bush while he was president, he is not retreating from the hunt for Osama bin Laden and other al-Qaida leaders.
• The US believes they are hiding in the tribal areas along the border with Afghanistan, and made 30 strikes last year in which more than 200 people were killed. In the election, Obama hinted at increased operations in Pakistan, saying he thought Bush had made a mistake in switching to Iraq before completing the job against al-Qaida in Afghanistan and Pakistan

• Missiles fired from suspected US drones killed at least 15 people inside Pakistan today, the first such strikes since Barack Obama became president and a clear sign that the controversial military policy begun by George W Bush has not changed.

• Security officials said the strikes, which saw up to five missiles slam into houses in separate villages, killed seven "foreigners" - a term that usually means al-Qaeda - but locals also said that three children lost their lives.

• President Obama today announced his new plans for Afghanistan and Pakistan. They include an increase of both U.S. military and civilian forces in Afghanistan and an increase of aid to Pakistan in return for help stopping militants in the border region.

• As for the reasons for this plan, Mr. Obama said this: "Let me be clear: al Qaeda and its allies – the terrorists who planned and supported the 9/11 attacks – are in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Multiple intelligence estimates have warned that al Qaeda is actively planning attacks on the U.S. homeland from its safe-haven in Pakistan. And if the Afghan government falls to the Taliban – or allows al Qaeda to go unchallenged – that country will again be a base for terrorists who want to kill as many of our people as they possibly can."

• With Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates at his side, President Obama unveiled a new strategy for fighting terrorists in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
• President Obama says the new strategy, which “marks the conclusion of a careful policy review” with top military and diplomatic officials, includes plans for increased funding and an additional 4,000 troops above the 17,000 increase he previously authorized. These 4,000 troops will train Afghan security forces

Barack Obama has taken the oath of office and been sworn in as America's 44th president - and the country's first African-American leader.

• More than one million people gathered in the National Mall in a wintry Washington DC, to see Mr Obama take the oath shortly after 1200 (1700 GMT).
• He used his inaugural address to vow to begin the work of "remaking America".
• The new US leader said his country faced a number of challenges but was entering a "new era of responsibility".
• But a shadow was cast over Mr Obama's celebrations in the hours after his swearing-in, as veteran Senator Ted Kennedy collapsed during the inaugural lunch.
• Mr Kennedy, whose support was seen as influential in winning over Democratic voters for Mr Obama, has been seriously ill with a brain tumour and has previously undergone surgery.
• • Earlier, in his inaugural address, Mr Obama made reference to the scale of his achievement at being the first black American elected to the White House, in a remark that gathered one of the biggest cheers of the speech.

Obama plans nuclear talks to lift threat of proliferation

• G8 leaders and heads of the five fastest developing market economies greet Barack Obama in L'Aquila yesterday
• • Barack Obama has called a global summit on reducing the world's stockpile of nuclear weapons which could eventually result in Britain's Trident system being scaled back.
  • The US President told G8 leaders at their meeting in Italy yesterday that between 20 and 30 nations would be invited to the non-proliferation summit in Washington next spring. He hopes to build on his successful disarmament talks held on Monday with the Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev.
  • The US-led initiative could pave the way for the world to warn Iran and North Korea that they would be treated as "pariah states" unless they stop developing nuclear weapons. The burden of proof would be on countries that are not yet members of the nuclear club to show they had not breached the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, raising the prospect of attempts to send weapons inspectors in if they refused to comply.

Obama wins Senate race to become 5th black U.S. senator in history

• CHICAGO (AP) — Barack Obama, who shot from obscurity to political stardom with his message of national unity, trounced Republican Alan Keyes at the polls in Illinois Tuesday to be elected the fifth black U.S. senator in history.

• "We can look forward to the future. We can build step-by-step to ensure we arrive at the practical commonsense solutions that all of us hope for," Obama said as he claimed victory Tuesday night.

• Obama overwhelmed Keyes, a conservative commentator recruited by the Illinois Republican Party after the primary winner dropped out, in what became the nation's first U.S. Senate race between two black major-party candidates.
• Keyes, in a combative speech Tuesday night that quoted heavily from the Bible but stopped short of conceding the race, vowed to fight what he called the corrupt politicians of Illinois.

• "We are called to go into the ditch, and though we must wade knee-deep in muck we will come out the other side," said Keyes. "This shall be our cause!"
• Obama will enter the Senate already boasting a national reputation and a list of politicians grateful for his help.
• The 43-year-old liberal state senator from Chicago catapulted to political prominence with a stirring keynote address at the Democratic National Convention. The speech made him a draw at political events across the country, able to raise money and attract media attention.

• Running against Keyes, who never posed a serious threat, gave Obama the freedom to make the most of his new stardom. He was able to donate campaign money to other candidates instead of spending it on his own race and take time to appear at rallies and fund-raisers across the country.

• Obama and Merkel discuss cooperation on climate change
  

• German Chancellor Angela Merkel paid the White House a visit June 26 and discussed a number of issues with President Obama, among them, climate change.
• The United States will “stand with Germany and lead in confronting the energy and climate change crisis,” Obama said. “Europe in many ways over the last several years has moved more rapidly than the United States on addressing this issue. And I’ve been very blunt and frank with Chancellor Merkel that we are still working through creating the framework where we can help lead the international effort,” he said.
